Linking into the orbital satellite for a use other than for battle Jeffery Harper scanned the surface of the planet "I know out planet is meant to be blue but this is seriously blue" Jeffery said to himself as he passed over what used to be New Zealand he saw something "The fuck is that?" he said as he zoomed in.
"A Rig!" he said in shock and jumped up and ran to find Eric Maters, "Boss!" he yelled upon finding him to attract his attention "I logged into the satellite to have a look around and I found another Rig, it's where New Zealand used to be" Jeffery explained.
Eric followed him back to the satellite uplink and saw the still that Jeffery had captured "Jeffery go fuel the Hind and put in plenty of extra fuel.. We're going to pay them a visit, they might be willing to join us, or at the very least might need our services... You can never have to much money" Eric smirked as Jeffery ran out of the room to fill up the Mi-24 Hind D.
25 minutes later they were ready to go, they had enough fuel to make it, but they would have to land a couple times to refuel but it would be mostly a smooth flight.
Hours later the Rig came into view, the Hind had full ammo in the rocket pods and machine gun so if they were hostile the Hind could at least fight back a little.
On board the Hind was Eric Maters, Jeffery Harper, Phil Waters and Terry Heartman
Eric was not a big man by most peoples standards he was 5'10 (1.77 meters) and average build but his strengths lie in his intelligence, he was had an excellent tactical mind and a born leader to boot. He fit the appearance of a leader and with a Colt Python strapped to each thigh would make most men look like a wannabe cowboy but Eric could pull the look off perfectly.
Jeffery was a small man really at only 5'4 (1.61 meters) but what he lacked in height he made up for in muscle he was as stocky as they come and his muscles rippled and popped under his clothes, but despite this he was very humble upon first meetings unless you annoyed him then his bull like rage came out and with his AK-47 in his hands he looked imposing and intimidating.
Phil was average in every sense of the word he was 5'9 (1.74 meters) and a very average build but he was fearless, he was not scared of dying or living he took each day as it came and treated life as a game that he played to win. He never went anywhere without his trusty MP-5.
Terry Heartman was a real nasty looking bastard at 6'2 (1.88 meters) he had seen his share of battles and had the scares to prove it, he did not wear them with pride but many of them could not be covered without a full face mask. He had a very deep and gravely voice that had almost a growl to it when ever he spoke and with his short barreled M-60 on the strap over his shoulder just adds to his intimidating factor.
They found an empty Helipad and set down, Eric, Jeffery and Terry jumped out and waited to see what kind of reception they got, while Phil kept his finger on the trigger of of the Hind's machine gun and waited...
For a few minutes they were alone, but then the access door at the far end of the helipad opened and a man walked through into the light. He was of mid-height and solid build, with slightly brown skin and shaggy black hair wedged under a green bucket hat. He wore a green bush jacket over a red-and-black checkered shirt, and a pair of muscled legs peeked out from under his jean shorts. In typical New Zealand fashion, his feet were protected only by a pair of jandals. He was also carrying an Austeyr F88 bullpup carbine, and at the sight of this Phil turned the Hind's gun to cover him. The man shrugged and raised his arms on either side to show that he meant no harm.
"Hey, brothers!" he called jovially. "Aint you got a radio? We almost shot you down till we saw you were flying that ol' rustbucket. Hey, welcome to Carthage, eh? I'm Rangi Te Arawa-Smith, but you can just call me Rangi..." He held out his hand for the men to shake.
Eric stepped forwards and gave Rangi a firm hand shake "Nice to meet you Rangi, the Name's Eric Maters."
"Pleased to meet you, Eric," Rangi beamed.
Jeffery then stepped forwards and also took Rangi's hand "Greetings Rangi, I'm Jeffery Harper."
"Kia Ora, Jeffrey. Welcome to Carthage."
Rangi turned to Terry and extended his hand and Terry just looked at him and spoke in his deep gruff tone "I don't know you, so thanks but no thanks."
Rangi shrugged. "Fair enough, eh? Hey, what's that?" he asked as Eric pulled a mini transponder out of his pocket and turned it off.
"It's a transponder/locator," Eric replied. "if anything had've happened to us HQ was authorized to launch an all out missile strike on you, but let us get down to why we came. One reason was to find other survivors, the second was to offer our services" Eric hands him a business card telling them the name of the organization and what they were.
"Displace International, eh? You blokes got much of a setup where you are? Eh, but I guess it isn't my job to ask you these things. I suppose that the boss will want to meet you fullas and talk about your organisation. D'you want to go see him? I can take you to him."
"Sure thing, be a pleasure" Eric said waving Phil over, Phil climbed out of the cockpit and walked towards Rangi "OK, lead on Rangi," Eric said gesturing for Rangi to go first. The man re-couched his carbine and flung open the access door, revealing a sharply spiralling metal stairwell. He went in and started clanking down the stamped metal stairs.
"To answer your question Rangi we do have a pretty sweet set up, but it would be pointless to explain it all now. I'll explain it you and your boss at the same time," Eric said as he followed Rangi into the Rig.
"Sounds good," Rangi replied. They reached the bottom of the stairwell and found themselves spilling out onto a catwalk beneath the helipad. "Where you are now, this is the Mangatepopo Rig. This used to be the best hiking spot in the country; now it's the site of our auxiliary helipad and western agricultural efforts." He moved quickly along the catwalk to a long ramp descending to the rough volcanic rocks below. It was quite a descent, made no easier by the thin mountain air. At length they arrived at what appeared to be some sort of carpark for the rig's vehicles.
"Nice setup" Eric said looking around but still following Rangi "I spy quite a few LAV IIIs" Phil said noticing them at the back of the car park
"Yeah, you're right. There used to be an army base east of here, and when things went to custard they left us with a lot of equipment to use." He tapped his rifle reverentially. "I used to be in the Army myself. Sergeant Te Arawa-Smith, but now I'm head of Carthage Security. Suppose I should've said that earlier, eh?. Ah, here we are..." he said as they arrived at a bulky utility vehicle. He opened two of the doors on the side and waved the visitors in. "Jump onboard, fullas. This used to be one of the army Pinzgaurs, but we busted through the back of the cab and made it into a people-mover. I call it the Hog."
"Not saying I don't like the guided tour, but where the hell are you taking us?" Eric said as he got into 'The Hog'
"Well," Rangi said as he slammed the doors shut, "The head of our operation here is a man called Mr Carthage. He stays in the Chateau on one of the other mountains' slopes. It's a bit of a way out from where we are now, so we have to drive down. You all buckled up? Right then, let's get moving."
He turned the keys and the Hog growled into life. Gravelly rocks popped from under the tyres as it began to roll along the road down into the valley. It hit a rock and the whole vehicle jumped sharply.
"Oh yeah," Rangi said. "I forgot to say, it's a bit of a bumpy ride..."
They jolted down into the valley, leaving the rig standing behind them on the volcanic slopes.
